Are PHA cups compostable?

PHA is pending home and industrial compostable certifications (due June 2024) to Australian and European standards. It's also marine biodegradable, breaking down faster than conventional plastic.

Yes. PHA is pending the Home Compostable Certification (AS5810 and NFT51-800) and Industrially Compostable Certification (AS4736 and EN13432) to Australian and European Standards. This is due June 2024.

The PHA lining resin is also certified to biodegrade in marine settings (ASTM D 6691). So if, worst case scenario, this product ends up in the sea it will break down significantly faster than conventional plastic. Please note: we do not condone littering into the ocean – the best place for PHA is in a compost facility.

A marine biodegradable certification means a product has been certified to reach at least 90% biodegradation in marine settings within 180 days (source). This is certified through OK biodegradable MARINE certification scheme.
